Linen shirt fabric search

Hello it's been a bit of an odd week here in UK (that's putting it mildly) but I'm trying to focus on menswear again now.  He who sits on the sofa has some favourite linen shirts that have been ideal for summer - actually for the past ten summers, I think. So now that they are practically in rags, I'm lifting the pattern with a view to making him some like-for-like replacements. I think Acorn http://www.acornfabrics.com/ might be a good source of fabric and will ask for some swatches. If anybody knows of a good linen shirt fabric supplier either in UK or Europe, that does short lengths, I'd would be very grateful. I would probably just buy some RTW linen shirts for him and not bother going down this route...but there don't seem to many out there now - at least not for the mature (slash corpulent) figure.

I have ordered at Acorn a bamboo linen blend this week.
Then I had some length from Napoli. It was a very nice linen cotton blend. Wears well - washes nice.
Napoli is a member here but I do not know if he sells anymore.

Thank you very much posaune and peterle, I will try the bamboo/linen blend from Acorn and explore ramie - which I've heard of but never actually seen.

The fabric arrived yesterday. The blend is a very fine and thin and light linen weave. It is semi transparent. And it wrinkels. I 'll wash it and see how it goes. I have also ordered some cotton voile. Just wov.

Hi Posaune,  Is that the Barbados bamboo/linen from Acorn?  It looked a good price but sounds a bit too thin for a man's shirt, at least for this man... he is very heavy boned - always goes through at the elbows. I'm thinking maybe some of the silk/linen and cotton/linen mixes from Whalleys in Bradford - http://www.whaleys-bradford.ltd.uk/catalogsearch/result/index/?p=1&q=linen and maybe even dyeing some lengths myself (although with the mixed fibres, home dyeing is a bit hit and miss, at least for me).  I live not too far away from Bradford so can drive over and collect - which is saves a lot on delivery costs.

Yes, it is thin. I have planed for short sleeves anyway.
If you look for a more sturdy (heavier) fabric - concider to take cotton with linen it does not wrinkle as much as linen and is durable and easy to care for.
I have done some jackets (heavy material) and shirts from this blend (shirt weight).
If you have natural fiber blends I think you can dye them very well.
Some of this linen I saw at your link I would take for oil painting!

I only recently discovered the drill satin linen.  I bought 2 mtr of dark navy, very heavy weight - for a couple ofvests.  I thought to use it for the backs but it is really too heavy.

I made many linen shirts in the 1990s.  In Australia people refer to "hanky weight" for the lightest weight, which is quite fine for men, in summer of course.  Cotton linen mix is very usable as posaune says.
