Title: Beautiful old German buttonhole shears
Post by: Schneiderfrei on May 15, 2019, 02:41:52 PM
I have had these for some time now; they are very easy to use and are sharp, though I have not sharpened them.

Ok, I'm just confused.......

How is such a contraption an improvement over a sharp chisel and hole punch?

They look like something my Opa would have dreamt up....notorious he was for over engineering most solutions!

Ok, no longer confused....just read your last post on the other thread! ;D

Those actually look as if my Opa and my mechanical engineer BIL could have collaborated on them together.

I have something similar. I went to a specialist but he couldn't sharpen it for me. To dificult. Pitty, it must have been a fantastic thing in it's time.
Why don't they make them anymore?

Very nice tool!

I wouldn't give up on the sharpening possibilities, should they arise in the future. Just a question of finding the right person - nothing is impossible. ;)

Oh what a nice sophisticated model! It seems the hole punch and the straight blade are seperated for easier sharpening and can also be adjusted seperately. I´ve seen models where the blades are one piece and I can imagine they are a p.i.t.a. to sharpen.

These things occure once in a while here on ebay and similar sides but are usually very expensive.

Thank you, very nice compliments and advice.

It was given to me by a retired local tailor.  I had helped him get some of his books (that I already had) on line, and bought a lot of cloths and threads and his heavy irons.

Haha, I have got one that I bought years ago as a curio but a hole punch and an exacto knife beats them all. A sharp chisel is a good choice as well. Once you know how to use them you are much faster than gadgets.
