Title: Does anyone know good Linen and Cotton fabric mills?
Post by: SO_tailor on February 28, 2022, 07:57:23 AM
I've been trying to find some linen and cotton mills for years and it's been curling a more crooked back than my crooked tailor's back (crunch ???). Does somebody have a good supplier of cottons and linens? because I haven't found a good reliable resource mill to buy from.

There is Acorn?

https://www.acornfabrics.com/shop/all-fabrics/

They mill their own cloth and ship worldwide.

I should point out, they are mostly shirting, a bit of gaberdine, but also pique and the other one?, for dress shirt fronts.

Acorn has buttons and things, but I mostly love Prestige for very nice buttons.

I did notice that the cloths are mostly on the light side, for shirting as you say. However, there's a really nice range and I've favourited that site for future use. Thanks for posting the link.  :)

Irish Linen is of good quality. Avoca Mill is usually bought via fabric shops, not directly. Fergusons will sell directly upon enquiry, from what I understand.

Mostly, when I've used linen, it's simply been advertised/labelled as 'Irish' and has always been of good quality. Other stuff I've taken pot luck with, and suffered the consequences.

I've looked at those but they only sell linen products, not the fabric itself. You said that Avoca sells in fabric shops, which fabric shops are those?

Both supply to the trade, but not to small fry like us:

First result in a google search ("Avoca Irish Linen"):

Scroll down for info on Irish linen and the advantages of using that heavier weight:

I bought a Italian cotton-linen blend a couple of years ago. Although beautiful cloth to look at, it's not fit for anything other than dress making (the weave is too loose). Not indicative of all Italian linen, of course, just an example of why dense isn't always a bad thing.

Now I see, the more heavy, the less wrinkles, gotcha. Although I was referring to canvas interlinings when talking about linen.

Ahhh, the holy MacCulloh & Wallis, how refreshing to revive my brain. I haven't thought about that company in a while, defiantly going to buy from them.
