That is a cool part of Sydney. 

When I was in my 20's I had the oppotunity to live for a month or so in Balmain. Just opposite the Dawn Fraser Swimming Baths.  It was very atmospheric.

I bought hemp cloth - Chinese grown, in the late 90's. Made a couple of pairs of zipper shorts with them. They were extemely comfortable. Very soft and durable. It is a dreadful shame on Dupont for ridding us of this cloth.

And, indeed Hutch when they finally wore out I smoked them.

Many Jack Tars were made from old hemp sails.
They weren't allowed to run around naked on those old sailing ships, so they didn't smoke the hemp.

This one old sailor, read his book, said they went bare foot in the north in the winter. Ice and snow. There The Ships Go.

Funny part is that if you have to grunt through multi-seams, long blade shears are not the best way to do it. If I have to cut through multi-layer seams of any weight, I use a cut down pair of Wiss 10 inch dress makers shears that were rescued from a saddlery. They had so much wear that I had to take about a quarter of an inch off the front to get the tips to match.

The real action in cutting heavy weight materials is handle length to blade length and the longer the handles are to the blade length the more power you have cutting stuff like that. Big shears have their advantage in accuracy and speed and in the right context will cut heavy material like sail cloth or heavy tweed.
